ARTISTIC STATEMENT
As an artist I am actively curious. I am constantly growing in myself and within my passion for dance. I choose to continue evolving in order to avoid staying complacent with my craft and with myself. I believe in feeling the fear and doing it anyways. You have to take risks and go beyond your comfort zone in order to learn and grow. The two go hand in hand because without the consequences of fear you are unable to artistically challenge yourself.
As a performing artist I strive towards sharing my story with the world through my expression. Dance nurtures my soul, benefits me, feeds me. It allows me to give meaning to emotions that I sometimes do not understand. Performing makes me vulnerable. I embrace the discomfort and manifest it into light so others can see me authentically. When I dance, I want to make my audience feel something. I aspire to inspire, to challenge perspectives, to impact the world.
As a choreographer I aim to create works that both bring attention to and distract the viewer from reality. I use choreography as a medium to translate my own thoughts and ideas through a visually stimulating lens. The way I chose to construct my work is based purely on impulse. A thought serves as a momentary drive that can take time to develop whereas an idea needs to be investigated immediately. I accept moments of creativity for what they are and chose to just be present with them. Once I share my art with others, it is no longer mine. The work belongs to the audience because they will interpret and manifest it in whatever way they choose.
My creative expression is both the most important thing in the world to me as well as does not matter at all. Dance for me is a balance, the balance between living artistically and living sanely. I dance because it allows me to feel the depth of my emotions. I dance because it gives me an outlet to express myself when I feel trapped. I dance because it connects me to people. I dance because it has brought me relationships that I cherish. I dance because it is fun. I dance because it gives me freedom. I dance because it has provided me with a voice, a reason to live, a motivation to create, a purpose.
